The Mexican government won’t pay one peso for a bigger wall on the U.S. border, thank you very much, Donald Trump.
A spokesman for Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto says Trump’s blustering boast about making the country foot the bill for a new border barrier is just a bunch of hot air.
“Of course it’s false,” Eduardo Sanchez told Bloomberg News in an interview. “It reflects an enormous ignorance for what Mexico represents, and also the irresponsibility of the candidate who’s saying it.”
Since announcing his candidacy for president in June, Trump has made disparaging remarks about Mexican migrants, calling them criminals and rapists, and accusing the country of sending “people with lots of problems” to America.
On Tuesday, at a news conference, the Republican candidate reiterated his promise to erect a giant fence and to send the bill to Mexico.
“We’re gonna get the wall built,” he said. “And Mexico’s gonna pay for the wall … And they’re gonna be happy about it.”
