GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) - Tourists headed to the Grand Canyon tomorrow could find themselves turned away at the entrance gates. National parks are scheduled to close if an agreement on the federal budget isn't reached. Employees of Grand Canyon National Park have been told to show up to work as scheduled but most of them would be sent home if the government shuts down.


PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County is halting new prosecutions of people under the state's immigrant smuggling law in the wake of a federal judge's order. County Attorney Bill Montgomery ordered the freeze on today in response to a ruling that the county can't prosecute people who pay to be smuggled into the United States with conspiracy.


LAS VEGAS (AP) - Allegiant Air says its fleet of MD-80 aircraft is back in service after an overhaul of emergency exit slides. Company spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler says service is normal nationwide today, with no delays or cancellations because of the maintenance work. The airline grounded its 52 MD-80s on Sept. 19 to check and service each exit chute.


SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A blind 17-year-old from Phoenix has completed a swim from Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park in San Francisco. Max Ashton tells the San Francisco Chronicle that he likes to show people that being sightless does not mean you must lose sight of your dreams. Ashton and two other blind swimmers were accompanied by sighted swimmers as guides.
