The TCU Horned Frogs are going to be without star quarterback Casey Pachall for an extended period of time.
In the second quarter of TCU’s 38-17 victory over SE Louisiana, Pachall scrambled right out of the pocket and was hit out of bounds, where a defender awkwardly landed on Pachall’s forearm.
According to Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the freak injury was severe enough to warrant an operation, and Pachall is expected to miss more than one contest:
It’s obviously horrible news for Pachall, who was partaking in a quarterback battle with Trevone Boykin. Both were ineffective in the Horned Frog’s Week 1 contest against LSU, but Pachall appeared to be turning things around against SE Louisiana with 14 completions for 100 yards.
Now the starting duties go back to Boykin for at least a few games, and in that timeframe he can wind up winning the job for good. Boykin took command after Pachall went down and completed 13 passes for 133 yards and two scores to propel TCU to victory.
The good news for TCU faithful is that the team has two quarterbacks with significant starting experience. The more traditional Pachall was one, and the dual-threat Boykin the other. Boykin adds something on the ground that Pachall simply cannot—as witnessed by his five carries for 35 yards in the victory.
Things are going to get a little more unpredictable for TCU offensively in the coming weeks, but that’s good as defenses will have more to prepare for than a straightforward passing attack.
Boykin is more than capable of leading the Horned Frogs to victory. With Pachall out of the picture, Boykin will have a supreme opportunity to prove himself next week when the team travels to take on Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M.
If TCU is going to win the Big 12, it will have to do it without Pachall for the time being.
