On Wednesday night the UFC held its second show on Fox Sports 1, headlined by a welterweight fight between Martin Kampmann and Carlos Condit, which proved to be an excellent showcase for the talent at 170lbs, with Condit stopping Kampmann in the fourth round by TKO. Raphael Dos Anjos also put on an excellent display to cement his place in the top ten at lightweight, with a dominant win over Donald Cerrone. Kelvin Gastelum, Court McGee, Takeya Mizugaki and Brad Tavares also picked up wins on the main card, with Gastelum in particularly impressive form against Brian Melancon. As always following every event, me (Dom) and Peter make our predictions for who the winners should face next.
Carlos Condit
Dom
Carlos Condit put on an excellent display against Martin Kampmann in their rematch. Following a tough first round, Condit turned it on in the next two and a half rounds and stopped Kampmann early in the fourth, cementing himself as one of the most exciting fighters in the world. For Condit’s next opponent, I’d like to think everyone would agree that it should be Matt Brown, in a slobberknocker of a fight.
Peter
Anyone who regularly reads the site will know that I’m a huge fan of ‘The Natural Born Killer’, so I was delighted with his amazing performance on Wednesday night. His striking to finish Kampmann off was clinical and it went to show he’s going to trouble anyone in the division on his day. I’m with Dom, a fight with Matt Brown would be like ‘totes amazeballs’ and would probably win ‘Fight of the Decade’.
Raphael Dos Anjos
Dom
Dos Anjos looks better with every fight and this was no different. His dominant performance over Donald Cerrone showed the world that he’s a legit contender at 155lbs and for his next fight, I’d like to see him face the winner of Diego Sanchez v Gilbert Melendez.
Peter
I think it was ultimate 80′s pop mega-star Yazz who said it best when she said ‘the only way is up’ (for dos Anjos). When you beat Donald Cerrone, who is quickly becoming the unofficial gatekeeper of the 155 lb division, you know you’re the real deal. I’d give him TJ Grant next with the winner getting a title shot.
Kelvin Gastelum
Dom
Gastelum looked highly impressive in his win over Brian Melancon and he continued the form he showed in the Ultimate Fighter house on his debut at welterweight. For Gastelums next opponent, I’d like to see him face his originally scheduled opponent, Paulo Thiago.
Peter
Who doesn’t love an underdog? Gastelum might not be the underdog anymore, which makes that analogy stupid, but its still good to root for the guy. Anyway, he battered Melancon and moves onto the next one, who in my eyes should be Sean Pierson.
Court McGee
Dom
McGee managed to edge a split decision over Robert Whittaker, that to be quite honest could have gone either way. For McGee’s next fight, I’d like to see him face T.J Walderburger.
Peter
I had Whittaker winning this fight but as Dom said it was really close. McGee is one of those guys who I can’t see getting passed a certain level, which is a shame because he’s a good fighter to watch. I’d give him Patrick Cote next.
Takeya Mizugaki
Dom
Mizugaki had a really entertaining fight with Erik Perez and displayed some excellent striking, as well as a solid chin. As it’s back to winning ways for Mizugaki, I’d like to see him face Raphael Assunçao, who is on a roll in the bantamweight division right now.
Peter
Great fight with a tight win for Mizugaki over the dangerous Perez. A real tester for him would be someone like Brad Pickett.
Brad Tavares
Dom
Tavares is on a roll right now at middleweight and is slowly but surely turning himself in to an elite middleweight. That being said, he does need a step up in competition and Costa Philippou would provide that in abundance.
Peter
I would not like to be on the receiving end of a Brad Tavares kick after seeing the damage he did to McDaniels leg and ribs. That’s four straight for Tavares now and as Dom said he needs to step up the competition. I’d like to see how his kicks fair against another kicking machine in Cung Le.
