The 10 Best TV Musical Moments of 2012

“If I Didn’t Know Better,” Nashville

Scarlett and Gunnar’s cover of The Civil Wars’ haunting “If I Didn’t Know Better” was the musical highlight of the Nashville pilot, and maybe even of the whole season so far (although we loved Rayna and Juliette’s duet on “Wrong Song.”)

Cassadee Pope, “Over You,” The Voice

Watching Blake Shelton fight back tears as Cassadee Pope gave a beautiful rendition of his wife Miranda Lambert’s ballad “Over You” was an emotional high point that helped launch Pope’s ride to The Voice finals.

Mariah Carey and The Roots, “All I Want for Christmas,” Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

The pop diva paid a visit to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to sing her classic Christmas song with some cutesy accompaniment from Fallon, The Roots, and some special guest singers. And it was awesome.

Phillip Phillips, “Home,” The Olympics

The American Idol winner’s coronation song was the perfect accompaniment to videos of the women’s U.S. gymnastics team during the 2012 Olympics. Fans fell in love — with the song and the gold medal winning team.

“Let Me Be Your Star,” Smash

Smash may have wobbled as the season progressed, but there was no denying power (and the powerhouse vocals) of the pilot’s standout musical number, “Let Me Be Your Star,” sung by the incredibly talented Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty.

“Like a Prayer,” Happy Endings

Max’s old Madonna cover band, “Mandonna,” dusted off their cone bras and came out of retirement to close out the hilarious second season of Happy Endings with a fabulous version of “Like a Prayer.”

Carly Rose Sonenclar, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” The X Factor

If there was ever any doubt that Carly Rose Sonenclar was one of the most talented contestants ever to compete in a reality singing competition, the 13-year-old blew away the competition (again) with her stunning version of the classic Wizard of Oz tune.

“Teenage Dream,” Glee

Blaine (Darren Criss) bust onto the Glee scene with a performance of Katy Perry’s joyful ode to youth, “Teenage Dream,” during the show’s second season. This season, Blaine gave a soulful reprise of the same song during an episode that featured him admitting to Kurt that he had been unfaithful.

Jessica Sanchez and Jennifer Holliday, “And I Am Telling You,” American Idol

Two huge voices, one incredible performance. During the Idol finale, 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez teamed up with the legendary Jennifer Holliday to perform a show-stopping version of the Dreamgirls classic “And I Am Telling You.” We’ll let the video speak for itself.

“Zou Bisou Bisou,” Mad Men

The Mad Men musical number, which featured Megan Draper serenading her new husband with the French tune “Zou Bisou Bisou” (originally sung by Gillian Hills), was a true watercooler moment that had everyone buzzing the next day. We couldn’t get the ditty out of our head for days.
