Media Newser Philippines: GMA-7 TO REVIVE 'MAGPAKAILANMAN'

Almost five years after its last airing, GMA-7 is reviving Magpakailanman, the drama anthology made famous by 24 Oras anchor Mel Tiangco. The format of show will remain as it was, telling and narrating the story of ordinary to famous people, with extraordinary stories.

Mel Tiangco will once again host the show, and will continue with her trademark interview during closing of the show.

Magpakailanman started as a special offering, good for one season, but was added to GMA-7's regular line-up after consistently topping its timeslot. It was then moved from Monday to Thursday nights during its second season, where it regularly toppled ABS-CBN's long-running drama anthology Maala-ala Mo Kaya in the Nielsen ratings. The moved inspired Maala-ala Mo Kaya to permanently changed its format, regularly featuring the stories of prominent people. It's also best remembered that it pressured ABS-CBN executives to move MMK from Thursday to Saturday night.

The drama anthology won a series of Catholic Mass Media and Anak TV Seal Awards, and earned Noni Buencamino an Asian Television Award for Best Actor in 2005. It was cancelled in 2008, reportedly due to low ratings, though the Kapuso network at that time said that they're looking for alternative programming, with the Iza Calzado starrer ESP.

Magpakailanman will return to GMA-7 this November.

Question: Do you think GMA-7 should also revive Mel and Joey? Or do you think Mel Tiangco should continue hosting a drama anthology show?
